VWAP Indicator: How the Volume Weighted Average Price Works
VWAP, the volume weighted average price, is the average price traded over a period, weighted by how much traded at each price. TradingView calculates it as the running total of typical price times volume, divided by the running total of volume, and restarts it at the beginning of each anchor period, such as a session.
What VWAP Tells You
VWAP answers one question: what has the average trader paid today? A simple average treats every candle the same. VWAP gives more weight to the prices where more coins changed hands, so a burst of heavy trading moves it more than a quiet hour.
That makes it a useful line in the sand, and it sits in two families at once in our TradingView indicators guide: volume and trend. When price is above VWAP, the average buyer of the period is in profit. When price is below it, the average buyer is underwater. Many intraday traders lean long above VWAP and short below it, and treat moves back to it as pullbacks.
VWAP restarts at the beginning of each anchor period, so by design it is a short-term tool. TradingView says it is typically used on intraday charts and has an option to hide it on daily charts and above (TradingView).

The VWAP Formula, Worked by Hand
TradingView's calculation takes the typical price of each candle, multiplies it by that candle's volume, and keeps a running total of both. VWAP is one total divided by the other.
VWAP = running total of (typical price x volume) / running total of volume
Here are three Bitcoin candles. Watch what the heavy third candle does to the result.
| Candle | High | Low | Close | Typical Price | Volume (BTC) | Price x Volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $80,300 | $79,700 | $80,000 | $80,000 | 100 | $8,000,000 |
| 2 | $81,000 | $80,200 | $80,600 | $80,600 | 50 | $4,030,000 |
| 3 | $80,100 | $79,400 | $79,600 | $79,700 | 150 | $11,955,000 |
| Total | 300 | $23,985,000 |
VWAP = $23,985,000 / 300 = $79,950. The simple average of the three typical prices is $80,100. VWAP sits $150 lower because half of all the volume traded in the third candle, at the lowest price. That is the whole idea: the price where the most trading happened counts the most.
Reading VWAP on a Chart
As a Trend Filter
Price holding above a rising VWAP is a session where buyers keep paying up. Price below a falling VWAP is the opposite. Trading in the direction of that line keeps you on the side the average participant is on, and a momentum tool like the RSI can confirm the push.
As a Pullback Level
In a trending session, price often comes back toward VWAP before continuing. A plan can use that retest the same way it uses a support or resistance retest, with the stop on the other side.
With Bands
TradingView can draw up to three upper and three lower bands around VWAP, measured in standard deviations or as a percentage, from the values since the last reset (TradingView). Price far outside the bands is stretched relative to the session's average, which some traders use for mean reversion trades.
An illustration. The VWAP line and band are calculated from the candles and volume drawn here.
VWAP in a 24/7 Market
Stock markets open and close, so a daily VWAP has a natural start. Crypto trades around the clock, so where a session VWAP resets depends on how the chart's data defines a day. Check the anchor setting on your chart rather than assuming it.
Volume also differs by exchange. A Bitcoin chart from one exchange uses that exchange's trades, so its VWAP can sit a little apart from another exchange's. Use the chart from the venue you actually trade on.
And like every tool on this page, VWAP can't size the trade for you. Size it from the stop in the position size calculator, and if you trade with leverage, check the leverage and liquidation calculator so liquidation sits beyond your stop.
Where VWAP Falls Short
- It lags late in the period. After hours of trading, one new candle barely moves it.
- It resets. Yesterday's VWAP is gone at the new anchor, so it says little about the bigger trend.
- It isn't a wall. Price can cut through VWAP and keep going. Every plan still needs a stop.
- Higher timeframes dilute it. On a daily chart a session VWAP is a single point per day, which is why it is hidden there by default.
For a level that doesn't reset each day, look at the volume profile, which shows where volume built up across any range you choose. New to all of this? Start with how to trade crypto.
Questions People Ask
Short answers to what people search for most, in plain words.
What is VWAP in trading?
VWAP is the volume weighted average price: the average price over a period, where prices with more volume count more. Traders use it as a benchmark for whether price is high or low compared with what the average participant paid.
How is VWAP calculated?
For each candle, take the typical price, which is the high plus the low plus the close divided by 3, and multiply it by the volume. Keep a running total of that and of the volume. VWAP is the first total divided by the second.
What is the best timeframe for VWAP?
VWAP is built for intraday charts, such as the 1-minute to 1-hour timeframes, because it restarts at each anchor period. On daily charts and above it is usually hidden.
What is the difference between VWAP and a moving average?
A simple moving average weights every candle the same and rolls forward forever. VWAP weights each price by its volume and restarts at each anchor period, so it shows the average price actually paid in that period.
Does VWAP work for crypto?
Yes, with two checks. Crypto trades around the clock, so confirm where your chart's VWAP resets, and use the chart from the exchange you trade on, since each exchange has its own volume.
